PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) Engineer/Scientist is a critical to the growth of the Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt Business, particularly for the new Duration Flex Impact Resistant Shingles product portfolio and other polymer modified asphalt solutions for roofing applications. This role is responsible for delivering supply security and enabling technologies through PMA formulation development by integrating strong material science and material characterization fundamentals to shingle product performance in polymer modified asphalt applications. The work will include formulation optimization, lab testing and rapid prototyping, pilot and plant manufacturing trials, data collection and analysis, and cross-functional project management.

The position will be located at Owens Corning's Asphalt Test Lab in our Summit, IL location with intermittent travel to our main Science & Technology center located in Granville, Ohio. The PMA Engineer/Scientist will work closely with our including the Asphalt Innovation Team, Asphalt Test Labs, Shingle Product and Process Development, Asphalt and Shingle Operations, and Sourcing. Span of Control: Individual contributor who works across the Roofing and Asphalt business, with focus on Residential Roofing Shingle Innovation

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrate a Commitment to Safety
  • Commit to our safety stand: all accidents are preventable; safety is everyone's responsibility and working safely is a condition of employment
  • Identify and correct safety hazards in the workplace and improve the safety of our processes through Design Hazard Eliminations (DHEs)
  • Actively participate in regular safety meetings, training and huddles
  • Ensure rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies


Development of Formulation Science and Technology (60%)
  • Optimize our formulation technology and science capability by leveraging performance-based methodologies and materials science background using rheology, microscopy and other relevant material characterization methods
  • Collaborate with operations and sourcing to ensure supply security of raw material for our PMA shingle products to mitigate supply chain management risks
  • Execute on the Fitness for Use Criteria (FFU) framework which accelerates the product development process
  • Support the development of more defined scale-up and mimic test to ensure end-product baseline and differentiated performance requirements are obtained


Product and Production Optimization (40%)
  • Support ongoing needs of the business as we grow our position in the roofing business
  • Participate on project teams in the optimization of new shingle products, processes, and supply chain to ensure sustainable solutions
  • Work on scale-up and production trials to ensure that the laboratory properties are translated into the production process and finished product
  • Provide technical leadership during the scale-up process and plant trials and provide oversight on all third-party operations
  • Work with the Product Innovation team to support the customer defined needs and incorporate them into new product and material compositions


JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in chemical engineering, material science, analytical chemistry, chemistry, polymer or macromolecular science, or similar
  • 2 years of demonstrated effective project management on technical or product optimization projects in collaboration across multiple stakeholders
  • Up to 15% travel needed to support project work. Project work is typically planned and scheduled in advance.
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills to effectively translate data to multifunctional audiences to provide project direction


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in polymers or polymer modified asphalt-related industry
  • Experience in bench top work or manufacturing which can include graduate level work
  • Experience in material characterization, preferably within rheology, microscopy, thermal/chemical analysis
  • Innovative mindset and the agility to adapt to and mitigate risks in an ever-changing business
